Connecticut Student banned from Senior Prom over asking out date with sign

One Shelton, Connecticut high school senior is making online dating news around the world over the yes and no responses he received regarding his prom. James Tate of Shelton High School wanted to impress his friend in a way his entire small world would notice. Instead, what he did and the stir it caused has gotten the entire world to take notice. As any lovestruck adventure seeking teenage boy would do, Tate went to the school in the middle of the night to post his big “ask out” sign. He taped foot-high pieces of cardboard and hung them at the school entrance to spell out “Sonali Rodrigues, Will you go to prom with me? HMU Tate.” (HMU supposedly stands for “hit me up” in young people lingo today).
The good news for James Tate is Sonali said yes. But now for the bad news. The school administration banned from attending the prom because they say he was guilty of trespassing and actually risked his life by using a ladder to put up the public plea for prom romance.
While school officials weren’t impressed, the most important thing for James Tate is the girl most definitely was. “This is really upsetting,” Rodrigues told the Connecticut Post newspaper. “It’s our senior year and we are supposed to have happy memories, not something like this.”The controversy is big news in Connecticut. Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti has thrown himself into the middle of the story in support of the kids. A growing Facebook group on behalf of Tate has already attracted more than 30,000. And here Tate is, the sole subject of a popular online dating blog.
